Youngest Driver Ever to Win this Prestigious Event

SILVERSTONE, ENGLAND (November 3,2009) Junior formula car standout Connor De Phillippi is the latest American to make his mark in European open-wheel racing, following his historic Walter Hayes Trophy win this past weekend at the Silverstone Circuit in England. The California teenager became the second consecutive Team USA Scholarship driver and youngest-ever winner, when he bested over a 100 other drivers in the prestigious 9 year-old Formula Ford event.

The reigning BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda champion, as expected, wasted little time coming to grips with the high-speed road course. As result, when the event officially got underway via qualifying, the No. 22 Team USA Scholarship/Cliff Dempsey Racing Ray GRS08 driver was one everyone was keeping a close eye on.

De Phillippi proved to be the driver to beat in the wet Saturday morning qualifying session, earning the pole position with a fast lap of 1:14.104. For the afternoon Heat race, the 16 year-old continued to impress, battling for the lead and crossing the stripe in second, a mere 0.283s behind the winner.

De Phillippi continued his charge towards the historic event win returning to the cockpit for the second Semi-Final race. Thanks to a first-lap tangle between two of the leading contenders, which he was fortunate to avoid, the race proved to be an uneventful affair for the talented young driver, leading every lap en route to the win. In scoring the victory, the American earned the pole position for the 15-lap Grand Final at the end of the day.

De Phillippi got a superb start in the Final Race of the weekend to commence the 2009 Walter Hayes Trophy. Initially it appeared as though as everything would go according to plan, pulling out a multi-car advantage. Disaster however nearly struck a short time later, when De Phillippi caught too much curb at the tricky Brooklands corner, getting sideways, falling back to fourth place. The Californian, well aware that he was still in contention, put his head down and set about regaining the lost positions. Following a pair of beautifully executed passes, De Phillippi retook first place via an out braking maneuver at the Becketts hairpin. Once back in the lead, he never relinquished the position, capturing the win by 1.035s.

De Phillippi has now returned to the U.S.A., commencing preparations for the 2010 race season, where he will race with a yet to be determined team in the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear via fully funded ride courtesy of the MAZDASPEED Driver Development Ladder program. The award is for winning the 2009 BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Series.

Well this weekend for Connor had mixed emotions!  He finished 3rd in qualify and 3rd in the first go round on Saturday. After all the first heat races were over Connor would start on the second row for today's first heat race.  He was in 2nd for a number of laps only to miss a shift falling back to 8th and finishing 8th for the race. The H pattern style shifting has been a little tricky for him to get use to.

In the Final race today Connor started on row 8 in the 15th starting position. Getting a great start he passes 3 cars in the first lap and by lap 8 he was 6th. Unfortunately not use to the more aggressive driving style in Europe a few laps later Connor gets hit from behind and sent off the track into the sand pit. He gets back on the track but has fallen back to 13th. He again starts to make his way through the pack again only to fall victim to another driver spinning out and coming back onto the track clipping Connors car and sending him off the track again. Now falling back to 15th he keeps his cool but by this time the race was near the end and he could only pass 5 cars by the time the checkered flag was waved. Finishing in the final in 10th spot for all the mishaps I think overall was a great finish!

A little disappointed on his finish today, he proved to himself and others that he can come from behind. He said if only there were more laps the outcome may have been better.  With one race under his belt and racing elbow to elbow with the Europeans he now knows what to expect for the next race. Putting this crazy weekend behind him he will go back to Ireland with the Dempsey's until his next race on October 31 at Silverstone for the Walter Hayes Memorial race.

Series Champion earns a fully funded ride in the 2010 Star Mazda Series

Connor completed his goal of winning the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda title this weekend (October 9-10), with a fourth and seventh place finish in the season-finale at Lime Rock Park. Earning himself a fully-funded ride in the 2010 Star Mazda Championship via the MAZDASPEED Driver Development Ladder program.

For Connor, the goal right from the get go at the fast Lime Rock Park road course was to ensure he took the green flag for race one of the season-finale doubleheader. In doing so, he would secure the Skip Barber National title. That being said, he was not going to merely just go out for a leisurely drive, given a pair of wins would give him nine career victories, and a new series record.

While things didn’t go exactly as planned after qualifying fourth in the rain for race one and seventh after running out of gas for race two qualify he had his work cut out.

Unfortunately conditions were less than ideal for race one. As the rain fell making for a very slick track combined with reduced visibility from the cars ahead made passing extremely difficult. With a lengthly full-course caution prevented any passing for several laps resulting in Connor holding on to fourth place and clenching the National Championship.

For race two on Sunday Connor knew his 7th place starting position would be a difficult one to come from behind on this narrow 1.53 mile track. The rain had stopped but the track was still very wet and slick in spots. At the green flag he immediately advanced one position and continued to charge towards the front. On lap three going two wide into turn two Connor gets pinched, forcing him into a water puddle and off the track. Putting this misfortune behind him he focused on working his way back to the front. Routinely turning the fastest laps of the race, Connor was among the top-five just after the halfway mark of the 25-lap affair. With three laps to go Connor found himself in 3rd place completing a stunning run to the front. As the top three cross the start/finish line for the final lap, Connor passers for the lead.  Unfortunately the fairytale finish did not occur, as a big twitch in “The Lefthander” resulted in briefly sliding off-course for a second time. Able to keep going without losing too much time, he ended his 2009 Skip Barber National season with a seventh place finish.

“While it’s not the way I wanted to end the season, I’m extremely happy to have won the 2009 Skip Barber National title,” “I’m already looking forward to the 2010 Star Mazda season, but before that I’m off to England, where I hope to extend the Team USA Scholarship win streak in the Formula Ford Festival and the Walter Hayes Trophy.”

As member of the Team USA Scholarship program Connor will pilot a car for Cliff Dempsey Racing this coming weekend (October 17-18) in the famed Formula Ford Festival at the Brands Hatch Circuit in England, before taking part in the renowned Walter Hayes Trophy event on October 31-November 1 at the Silverstone Circuit in England. Connor will also be trying out  for the F1 Grand Prix Shootout Scholarship while he is in England.

Back to Back Wins at Road America Setting a New National Series Record

Connor puts on an impressive display this past weekend at Road America when the Skip Barber National Series Presented by Mazda raced the full 4.0-mile road circuit, stepping to the forefront with a pair of victories that have further stretched his lead in the overall standings. This weekend brought his season win total to seven, setting a new record for the Skip Barber National Series.

"I can’t complain at all," said Connor after the weekend’s racing. "I got a pole and two wins. It was a successful weekend for sure. I couldn’t have asked for anything better!"

The weekend started strong, with a pole position on Saturday. The opening race of the weekend got underway with Connor leading a large pack of cars through the opening turns of the historic race course. After an early caution, he led the field past the start-finish line for the restart as overly-aggressive racing for second allowed him to break free and drive away from the field.

"When I saw they were three-wide in turn one, I knew that this would be my chance. I put together some good laps and got a good gap opened up." said Connor

Connor would not be challenged as he scored the win, tying Grant Maiman for the all-time Skip Barber record.

Sunday’s race was a little tougher, but he was still able to keep his cool. Qualifying third for race two of the doubleheader weekend, he was 0.285 seconds off the pole. The race on Sunday was messy with only five of the 13 starters seeing the checkered flag.

"Sunday was by far the craziest race I’ve ever been in," Connor said. "I just had to keep my head down and stay out of trouble."

Early in the race there was a big wreck in Canada Corner, which took out three cars. Connor was able to stay clean through the mayhem. With time running out, the lead position swapped several times with the top four drivers. A late-race contact took out another group of cars, leaving Court Vernon and Connor to fight it out for the win. The last lap Vernon was in the lead so Connor position himself well, pulling in behind him to draft by at the strip by a scant .004 seconds.

Connor sets a new National Series record with 7 wins thus far for the series after Sundays victory.

With four races remaining, Connor has a 43-point lead coming into the next race at Road Atlanta September 23 - 26 during the famed Petit Le Mans weekend. Even with a big lead, he is still focusing on winning races. "Podiums are good, but I’d like to keep the winning streak going," he added.
